Summer Jam 2014

I had the great pleasure of participating in The Roast fish Cornbread Summer Jam recently. I was so excited to work with some old friends as well as some new ones. I painted 2 days before the event which allowed me to meet and paint with some truly amazing people. By the time all painting was done the building was very impressive capped off by the outside murals by Greg Craola Simkins and OG Slick. Crazy wall to say the least. The event was amazing, reconnecting with a lot of friends and amazing performances by Toys That Kill and The Shape Shifters. I can't say enough about the crew of artists that came through. Big thanks to all involved. Respect.

Event July 26th 2014 - Los Angeles

I will be a part of this event in July. I am happy to be doing an event with some old friends and possibly some new ones. The line-up is really an amazing one with some super talented artists including Greg "Craola" Simkins, Poor Al, Kyle William Harper, Tiki Jay, Circus CBS, Germs, TRAV MSK, and many more including live performances by The Almighty Shape Shifterz and others. It will be fun to paint alongside some great friends I have made in and out of the art world.

California

Home for the holidays in California. Traveling is so much different when you have a child. It is so hard to squeeze in creative time, social time, down time, but it is all worth it. I really miss California for obvious reasons as well as personal reasons but I also like being away in my fortress of solitude, Washington.

I got to do a mural on a pretty big wall. Hadn’t used cans in awhile so it was equally fun and frustrating. I have learned recently that many people claim a background in graffiti when really they have none. Why? It can only hurt you. My experience with graffiti is very simple, I have done many murals with cans but never got with a crew. That is something I regret sometimes because I was offered introduction into crews that would have made me a much better all around artist. I felt I didn’t want to go down a traditional graffiti path and since I had no idea that graffiti would be the hipster wet dream that it is today I began to only implement cans (Spray-paint) as a tool to do my paintings larger. This is in essence graffiti but I cannot claim the title of “Graffiti Artist” and neither should anyone who hasn’t paid their dues. It’s a real deal respectable art. “Street Art” is a whole other mess.

I had a good trip and by accident learned a lot about art. What some people want from it, why they do it, and most of all how pricing is never fair. No big revelations. I miss my beautiful Torrance and didn’t get to see even a quarter of the people I intended on seeing. Next time Los Angeles.

Growing up in a City of Angels

This is simply one of the best montages of Los Angeles I have ever seen. The clip is from “The Canyons” which was written by Bret Easton Ellis who I have been a fan of since I was a teenager.
The video captures L.A. in a perfect way. Behind the polished exterior lies a deep isolation, one I know very well. In Ellis’s books Less Than Zero and its sequel Imperial Bedrooms, there are characters and situations that are very unique to L.A. A lack of empathy and a darkness. I knew people like the characters in the books. Empty, always searching but getting nowhere. As the darkness started to surround me I knew I needed to get out before I let the city devour me. Videos like this make wonder if anything would be different if I went back. Will my ghosts still be there waiting? Maybe they never left me at all. Los Angeles is a city that holds a strange energy, one that contains beauty and death at the same time. The angels might watch out for you or turn your soul black. Everything was after all, my own experience. L.A. Is just as beautiful and isolating as the clip and I am proud I grew up there. Darkness and all.
